UNCASVILLE, CONN. – In the BIG EAST championship game on Monday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena, the No. 1 Connecticut Huskies proved to be too much as the Huskies tallied a 90-51 win over the No. 2 seed Villanova Wildcats. With the victory, Connecticut improves to 34-0 on the year, while Villanova falls to 25-7.
For their efforts in the three games this weekend, sophomore guard Jasmine Bascoe and freshman guard Kennedy Henry were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Connecticut started fast, racing to an 11-3 lead and forcing an early Wildcat timeout. A three-ball by Villanova sophomore Dani Ceseretti made it a 17-8 game, before the Huskies scored four straight points to increase the lead to 21-8.
The Huskies finished the opening quarter, connecting on 11-of-18 from the field to lead 23-11 after the game's first 10 minutes. Villanova was just 3-of-13 from the field in the opening frame.
Connecticut led 30-14 early in the second quarter, when the Huskies went on a 13-3 run to open-up a 43-17 advantage with 2:52 left until halftime. The run propelled Connecticut to a 49-23 lead at intermission.
Villanova would not get within 27 in the second half and the Huskies would lead by as many as 42.
Bascoe led the Wildcats in the loss with 14 points, while Henry had nine points and seven rebounds.
Connecticut was paced by Azzi Fudd with 19 points and Sarah Strong who had 18 points.
For the game, Villanova was 18-of-66 from the field (27.2%), 7-of-37 from three-point range (18.9%) and 8-of-11 from the foul line (72.7%), while Connecticut shot 52.3 percent from the floor (34-of-65), 31.8 percent from long distance (7-of-22) and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-21). The Huskies owned a 49-34 advantage on the backboards.
