Weekly Wrap: Villanova Announces Top Performers for the Week Ending March 29

New for the 2025-26 academic year, Villanova will announce its top performers from the previous week in a press release and social media post each Monday afternoon. The weekly wrap will recognize one standout student-athlete from each sport who competed during the previous week.

VILLANOVA, Pa.—The women's lacrosse team tallied the highest-ranked victory in program history when it knocked off No. 2 Stanford in a 9-8 thriller at Villanova Stadium this weekend. It was an exciting week all-around for the Wildcats, with the golf team placing second at the Golden Horseshoe and senior Matt Zerfass claiming tournament medalist honors. The softball team won a BIG EAST series against Georgetown and the men's lacrosse team tallied its biggest win of the season in its conference opener at St. John's. Eight student-athletes make up this week's Villanova Athletics Weekly Wrap sponsored by Zajac and Padilla.

Baseball
Collin Quintano
Senior, Designated Hitter/First Base, Easton, Pa.

Quintano slashed .412/.444/.588 over four games and 18 plate appearances last week. He hit his team-high sixth home run of the season in a win over Hofstra and hit safely in all four games, including two hits in the Hofstra game and his third three-hit game of the season against UT Arlington when he went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in.

Golf
Matt Zerfass
Senior, Macungie, Pa.

Zerfass claimed tournament medalist honors for the second time in his career with a score of 208 (-5) at the Golden Horseshoe last week. He carded scores below par in two of the three rounds in the tournament and helped Villanova finish second out of 13 teams in the field. Zerfass shot a career-best 67 (-4) in the final round and wrapped up the week with scores of 69-70-67.

Men's Lacrosse
Luke Raymond
Graduate Student, Attack/Midfield, Crownsville, Md.

Villanova won its BIG EAST opener with a 21-7 drubbing of St. John's in which Raymond scored as many goals himself as the Wildcats allowed. His career-high seven goals was the highest scoring output by a Villanova player since 2022 and his seventh multi-goal game of the year. He opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the contest and scored three times in a span of just over five minutes in the second quarter as the Wildcats pulled away from a close game to take a 10-5 lead by halftime.

Women's Lacrosse
Mary Moore
Redshirt Sophomore, Midfield, Annapolis, Md.

Villanova tallied its highest-ranked victory in program history with a 9-8 upset of No. 2 Stanford. Moore scored the go-ahead goal late in the third quarter and finished the day with a team-high three goals and four points. After missing last season due to an injury, Moore is leading the Wildcats with 19 goals this season and is tied for the team lead with 29 points.

Softball
Lexi Kobryn
Sophomore, Pitcher/Designated Player, Hillsborough, N.J.

Kobryn was a two-way contributor for the Wildcats last week, including one of her best games of the season in a walk-off win over Georgetown. She went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a stolen base in the game, with her run-scoring single in the fifth inning helping Villanova rally from a four-run deficit. She also pitched six innings of one-run relief and was the winning pitcher as the Wildcats pulled out a walk-off, 6-5 win in 11 innings. Kobryn made three pitching appearances during the week and had four hits at the plate.

Men's Tennis
Thomas Wakefield
Junior, Sandy Springs, Ga.

In Villanova's only match of the week, Wakefield rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over his opponent from Bucknell on Sunday afternoon. He tallied one of the team's two points in the match.

Women's Tennis
Miriam Gondorova
Junior, Humenne, Slovakia

Gondorova won both of her singles matches during the week as the Wildcats took on Rider and Temple. Playing at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, she posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Rider to help lift Villanova to a 6-1 team victory. She also teamed up with sophomore teammate Olivia Corcoran for a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. In a close 4-3 loss to Temple, Gondorova scored one of the team's three singles victories with a 6-4, 6-0 decision.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Ryan Beegle
Junior, Distance, Chatham, N.J.

Beegle finished first in the 1500 meters at the Danny Curran Invitational over the weekend. In his first race of the outdoor season, he tallied a time of 3:58.09.

Women's Outdoor Track & Field
Rosie Shay
Sophomore, Distance, Middletown, N.J.

Shay posted the best time in the 1500 meters by a Villanova runner in seven years at the Raleigh Relays. Her personal best time of 4:14.19 moved her into ninth place in school history in the event and made her just the second person since 2019 to break onto the top 10 of the program's all-time performance list. She also recorded a PR of 2:07.31 in the 800 meters to close out the weekend. Already this calendar year, Shay has registered personal best times in the 800 meters, 1500 meters, mile and 3000 meters.

Water Polo
Ella Mattocks
Senior, Center, Shutesbury, Mass.

Villanova swept its final three matches of the regular season to clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship next month. Mattocks got the past weekend off to a strong start with a team-high six goals in a 15-7 win over Siena. She scored 12 goals total for the week, and in the regular season finale against Mount St. Mary's chipped in to a 16-9 win with four scores and four exclusions drawn.
