VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova men's lacrosse suffered its first overtime loss of the season on Saturday, falling 10-9 to the Providence Friars at Villanova Stadium.
David Link and Luke Raymond each paced Villanova (5-6, 2-1 BIG EAST) with three goals as Raymond added an assist for a team-high four points.
George Glomb was strong again in the middle of the field, winning 13 faceoffs with 10 ground balls on the day. Anthony Wilson tied his season-high 15 saves between the pipes for the 'Cats, including nine in the third quarter and five in the first.
David Evanchick scored the first goal of his career while Nick Lucchesi and Colin Michener contributed the other scores for Villanova. Kessy Cox and Lucas Newton each posted a pair of assists on the day and Jack Shoemaker caused four turnovers in the outing.
It was Senior Day on the Main Line, honoring the program's 13 seniors in a pregame ceremony: Evanchick, Link, Michener, Newton, Shoemaker, Wilson, James Beeghly, Julian Glantz, Scot Mackie, David Sadasivam, Tate Seeman, Luke Williams and student manager Timmy Gilner.
The Wildcats started out the game on a three-goal run, getting a pair of scores from Link off Newton and Cox assists while Lucchesi beat his man with a downhill dodge for an unassisted tally. Providence got the last goal of the first, but the 'Cats led 3-1 after one.
It was a low-scoring second quarter where the only tallies came from Raymond, his first strike coming off a Newton pass at 5:33 before Nolan Sabel found him wide open on the crease for a 5-1 Wildcat lead heading into the second half.
The Friars opened up the third period with a pair of goals before Raymond put home a Cox feed and Michener created an unassisted chance for a 7-3 advantage 45 minutes into the game.
Providence began the fourth with a tally before Evanchick picked up a ground ball on the ride and dodged his way to the cage, scoring the first goal of his career.
But the visitors got the next three scores and made it a one-goal game at 6:46. It looked like Link's third goal of the day may ice it, but Providence drew back within one then got the game-tying tally at 45 seconds to force overtime.
Glomb won the opening faceoff in the extra period but the Wildcats turned it over on the offensive end, and PC cashed in on the other side to steal a 10-9 victory.
UP NEXT: The 'Cats will finish their road slate next weekend, traveling to Milwaukee for a bout at Marquette on Saturday (12 p.m. Eastern / 11 a.m. Central).
