LEXINGTON, Ky.—Villanova opened competition at the 2026 NCAA East First Round with heats of the 800 meters and the 1500 meters at the University of Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Complex on Wednesday evening. Junior middle distance runner
Dan Watcke (Hinsdale, Ill.) ran in the first round of the 800 meters for the third straight year, while graduate student
Seán Donoghue (Dublin, Ireland) and sophomore
Ben Thomas (Sydney, Australia) each competed in the opening round of the 1500 meters.
Watcke was in the fifth of six heats in the 800 meters and raced in a competitive section that came down to miniscule separation at the finish line. He posted a time of 1:47.58 and came in fifth in his heat, with only the top three runners earning automatic qualifying spots to the quarterfinal round on Friday night. Six additional on-time qualifying spots all came from the first or second heats of the event.
Earlier in the evening, Donoghue opened the week of competition for the Wildcats in the first of four heats in the 1500 meters. This is his fourth career appearance at the NCAA East First Round competition and he posted a time of 3:50.65 to come in seventh in his race, which went out at a slower pace than the sections behind it. Thomas is a first time qualifier for the meet and recorded a time of 3:47.38 to finish 10
th in his race and 26
th overall in the first round results.
The trio of Watcke, Donoghue and Thomas have been among the team's highest performing athletes this season and during their careers. Watcke is a five-time BIG EAST medalist in the 800 meters, including a silver medal at the conference championships two weeks ago. Donoghue and Thomas have each run the metric equivalent of sub-four-minute miles this outdoor season and qualified for the BIG EAST final.
Women's competition gets started in Kentucky on Thursday and Villanova will be represented in the first round of both the 1500 meters and the 400 meter hurdles. Men's action will resume on Friday night when the Wildcats have entries in the 3000 meter steeplechase and the 5000 meters.
