Villanova University placed 55th in the final 2003-04 NACDA United States Academy Directors' Cup standings released on Thursday, July 1. Villanova's finish represents the fourth highest ranking for a non Division I-A football school.
"This impressive finish places us in very exclusive company as one of the nation's most successful across-the-board athletic programs," said Villanova Director of Athletics Vince Nicastro. "This achievement is a credit to the hard work and dedication of both our student-athletes and coaching staffs."
Villanova and the University of Utah finished in a 55th place tie with 348 points. Stanford finished first for the 10th consecutive year with 1337.3 points. Rounding out the top five were Michigan, UCLA, Ohio State and Georgia.
The United States Sports Academy is serving as this year's sponsor for the NACDA Director's Cup. The Cup is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the best overall athletics program. The Directors' Cup began for Division I by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today in 1993-94. There are 274 eligible colleges and universities in NCAA Division I.
Points are awarded in 20 men's and women's sports with standings released 11 times throughout the academic year. See www.nacda.com for more information on the Directors' Cup standings.
