Sept. 17, 2003
VILLANOVA, PA - Villanova fall sports are off and running in 2003, with the football, men's and women's cross country and women's soccer teams all ranked in the Top 20 in their respective national polls.
Leading the way is the Villanova football team, off to a 3-0 start under head coach Andy Talley, including an overtime victory over I-A Temple earlier this month. The Wildcats are ranked 5th in the latest Sports Network Poll, fresh off their 48-14 victory over New Hampshire in the Atlantic 10 Conference opener. The 'Cats are back in action on Saturday, Sept. 27 against Northeastern at 12:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
Also earning a No. 5 national ranking is the Villanova women's cross country team. The 'Cats were given this distinction in the season's first Women's U.S. Cross Country Coaches' Poll.
On the men's side, the Wildcats received a No. 10 ranking, good enough for a tie with Eastern Michigan. The men's and women's teams have their first meet of the year today at the Haverford Invitational.
The final Villanova fall sports team currently ranked nationally is Ann Clifton's women's soccer team, riding a season-opening six game winning streak. The 'Cats have given up just three goals in their six games, and for their efforts they are ranked 18th in the Soccer America Top 25 Poll released on Sept. 15. The Wildcats will put their undefeated record and national ranking on the line at Providence on Friday, Sept. 19 at 4:00 p.m.
