PHILADELPHIA--The Philadelphia Big 5 wants to Slam Dunk hunger this holiday season. The Big 5 schools are teaming up with the Greater Philadelphia Food Bank to collect nonperishable food items at basketball games on each campus, as well as at the Big 5 Classic on December 6th at the Palestra.
With basketball season right around the corner, fans can show their school pride in this off-court competition - donating canned goods in food bank collection bins during home games at all six Philadelphia schools.
Over the past two seasons, the Slam Dunk Hunger campaign brought in more than 12,500 pounds of food from Big 5 schools to help feed the needy in the area. Whether they cheer for LaSalle, Saint Joseph's, University of Pennsylvania, Temple, Villanova or Drexel, fans of the home team can help make this year's Slam Dunk Hunger campaign an even bigger success.
Greater Philadelphia Food Bank collection barrels will be at Villanova on December 4th as the women take on Penn and again on December 9th as the women battle Saint Joseph's. Collections will also be taken on December 12th as the men take on Northeastern.
Collection bins will also be at the Big 5 Classic on December 6th at the Palestra during all three games.
The Greater Philadelphia Food Bank distributes food donations to nearly 800 local nonprofit organizations to fight hunger, helping to feed 57,000 people each week through Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.
