VILLANOVA, PA-- The Sears Directors' Cup is presented each spring by the nation's athletics directors to the school with the most successful all-around athletic program. In the latest Sears Directors' Cup rankings published in USA Today on Nov. 20, Villanova University stood in an 11th place tie with Old Dominion, each school holding 100 points.
The University of Colorado took its first-ever lead in the Division I rankings. Colorado won the national title in women's cross country and placed second in men's cross country to record 190 points in the first set of standings.
Following Colorado was Stanford in second place with 175 points, Arkansas in third with 147 points, North Carolina in fourth with 140 points and Providence in fifth with 139 points. Rounding out the top ten were Georgetown (134.5), Wisconsin (133), Wake Forest (132), Brigham Young (119), and North Carolina State (106).
The first set of point standings were based upon the results of four sports which include men's and women's soccer and men's and women's cross country. At the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Villanova University put together a fine showing with the men placing sixth and the women finishing 20th.
