Villanova Student-Athlete Of The Week

Dec. 15, 2003

Curtis Sumpter

Villanova Athletics is proud to present the Villanova P.A.W.S program: Providing Athletes With Support. The P.A.W.S. program helps to ensure the best quality experience for Villanova student-athletes, both in the classroom and on the playing fields. Wildcat student-athletes represent the best in athletic and academic achievements, and Villanova is proud to recognize these student leaders.

This week's P.A.W.S. honors go to the Wildcat's Curtis Sumpter, a sophomore men's basketball standout from Brooklyn, N.Y., and Bishop Loughlin High School. On Monday, Dec. 15th, Sumpter was named co-Big East Conference Player of the Week along with Providence forward Ryan Gomes. He also was named Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week after a superb week in which he sparked the Wildcats to a pair of victories.

On Dec. 9, Sumpter contributed 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field in a 73-63 Philadelphia Big Five victory at Pennsylvania. The Wildcat standout also was 6-of-6 at the free throw line. This marked Villanova's third straight City Series win this season, all achieved away from the Pavilion.

Three nights later in the squad's home opener, Sumpter delivered a memorable performance, scoring a career-high 39 points in a 74-55 victory over Northeastern. The points were the most scored by a Villanova player since Kerry Kittles dropped in 44 points in a game against Boston College on Feb. 28, 1995. Sumpter connected on 16-of-20 field goal attempts and added nine rebounds, falling one carom shy of his first career double-double.

We congratulate Curtis on his achievements, and proudly support the Villanova P.A.W.S. program. For additional information regarding P.A.W.S., contact Villanova University at (610) 519-4605.
