Villanova University Director of Athletics Tim Hofferth, today named former Wildcat basketball standout Whitey Rigsby as the Director of the newly formed Block V fund-raising Club. Rigsby will officially join the Villanova staff and begin his appointment as Director on Jan 3, 2000.
"We are extremely excited to have a person of Whitey Rigsby's caliber to lead this fund-raising effort into the 21st Century," said Hofferth. "Whitey is well known and respected throughout the Villanova community. As a former student-athlete, he is a natural fit for this position and one who understands the mission of Villanova University."
The Block V Club is the official booster and fund-raising organization of Villanova Athletics. The Club will provide funds to guarantee the growth of Villanova Athletics in its continuing efforts to provide the highest level of academic and athletic resources for its student-athletes.
Rigsby was a four-year varsity letter-winner and three-year starter for the Wildcats from 1974-78. In 119 career games on the Main Line, Rigsby tallied 798 points, 490 rebounds and 393 assists. He still currently ranks 12th on the school's all-time assist list.
"It is an honor to return to my alma mater as the Director of the Block V Club," said Rigsby. "Villanova provided me with the tools for success in life and I look forward to the opportunity of assisting all Wildcat student-athletes in their goal of obtaining excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field."
For the past 19 seasons, Rigsby has been a member of the Villanova broadcast team. As a broadcaster, Rigsby helped call the Wildcats' 1985 NCAA and 1994 NIT Championships. In addition, Rigsby serves as the co-host for the Steve Lappas Radio and Television Shows.
