Title IX 50th Anniversary Header

VILLANOVA, Pa. – June 23 marks 50 years since Title IX was passed, allowing for an expansion of opportunities for girls and women in sports. In honor of the anniversary, Villanova Athletics will begin a  multi-month celebration that will last through the rest of the year, highlighting the past, present and future of Villanova Women's Athletics.

The celebration kicks off Thursday with the first of a three-part video series that can be found here on the Villanova Athletics website as well as Villanova Athletics Twitter, Instagram and Facebook channels. The first part of the series highlights "The Foundation". Part two called "Living the Legacy" makes its way to the public in September before the final installation, "Just Getting Started" premiers in November. Each part of the series brings in various women who have left their mark on the ever-growing landscape of women's athletics on the Main Line. They will share their stories and memories while also looking ahead at what is still to come for future Wildcats.

On June 23, 1972, Title IX was passed as a landmark gender equity law that was a part of the Education Amendments of 1972. This law banned discrimination and exclusion on the basis of sex in education programs or activities at any institutions receiving federal financial assistance. Today, Villanova has 13 women's sports with over 300 student-athletes on those teams.

Check back here for various highlights from the celebration as they are released in the coming months. More on the celebration and the Women's Athletics Empowerment Initiative at Villanova can be found on this page.
