1971 MEN'S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

In 1967, Marty Liquori became only the third high schooler to break a four-minute mile and one of the most sought-after recruits in the country. In 1968, he became the youngest Olympic finalist in the 1500 meters (a stress fracture relegated him to a third place finish).

But in college, Kansas' Jim Ryun stood in his way. Twice Liquori failed to beat the great Jayhawk in the NCAA indoor championships but in 1971, Liquori got his revenge. He didn't beat Ryun head to head; he'd graduated by then. But Liquori became the first since Ryun in 1968 and the second runner in history to win both the mile and the two mile, and he did it in better time - 4:04.7 versus 4:06.6 in the mile and 8:37.1 versus 8:38.8 in the two mile.

Liquori's double also vaulted Villanova to its second indoor championship. It was a major ask and a major risk. Had he stuck to just the mile, Liquori would have won easily but he knew his team needed the extra push. So instead, a mere 72 minutes after qualifying for the mile final, he ran the two mile race.

Liquori wasn't the only here. Ken Schappert finished his leg of the mile relay after breaking blisters on both of his feed and Chris Mason, his feet similarly damaged and his knees swollen, anchored the distance medley relay to a needed third place finish.
