Joe Sweeley is in his first year at Villanova serving as the Assistant Coach for Men's and Women's Sprinters.
Sweeley began his track coaching career at Widener University.  He was the Sprinters Coach for the Indoor and Outdoor Track Teams, having coached Division III student-athletes to a total of 27 Conference Champions, 8 NCAA All-Americans, 1 NCAA National Champion in four seasons.
 
He attended Widener where he was a three-year starter on the football team as a wide receiver and return specialist under legendary head coach Bill Manlove.  As a senior Sweeley was named 1st Team All Middle Atlantic Conference and 1st Team All Eastern College Athletic Conference.  He was a four-year letter winner on both the Indoor and Outdoor Track teams, was named co-captain in 1990 and 1991, and was a three-time conference finalist in both the 55-meter and 100-meter dash.  Upon graduation Sweeley held six school records, two conference records, and was inducted into the Widener University Athletic Wall of Fame. 
 
While in college, Sweeley worked out for the NFL Scouting Combine and signed as a free agent wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1991.  He went on to be a member of the 60 Man-Roster and played for the Eagles in the 1991 American Bowl against the Buffalo Bills at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
 
Sweeley signed as a wide receiver in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Toronto Argonauts in 1992.
He signed with the NFL sponsored World League of American Football (WLAF) and was included in the 1992 World League Draft. He had tryouts with the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns, as well as the Carolina Panthers at their facility in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

As a resident of Broomall, Sweeley graduated from Marple-Newtown High School where he was a member of the football team and the indoor and outdoor track teams.  He qualified for the State Indoor Track Championship as the lead off runner for the sprint relay and was named to the Delaware County Hero Bowl All-Star game as a wide receiver.  In 2014 Sweeley was inducted into the Marple-Newtown Athletic Hall of Fame.

Sweeley earned his electrical engineering degree and is the principal of a critical power services firm.  He and his wife, Diane, have two children Elaina and Michael.
