Villanova, Pa.--- On Dec. 13, in Washington, D.C., the Villanova University women's basketball team lost to George Washington University, 60-47, despite the seventh straight double-figure scoring outing by senior forward Jenea Skeeters who registered 17 points. The Wildcats fall to 4-5 overall with the loss, while the Colonials improve to 6-2.
Villanova fell behind early, 23-13 at the 7:24 mark of the first half, but fought back to within one by the time intermission rolled around. The Wildcats ended the half on a 9-2 run in the final 6:48 led by six points from junior center Brandi Barnes to go into the half down by just a 25-24 margin.
Villanova shot only 34.6 percent in the first half (nine-for-26), but Skeeters kept the `Cats in the game with nine points and four boards. The `Nova defense held George Washington to 35.7 percent shooting from the field on 10-for-28.
The Wildcats kept the contest close in the early moments of the second half, but the Colonials went on an 11-6 spurt to take a 44-35 advantage with 9:27 remaining. Villanova rallied behind five quick points by junior guard Megan Stewart to trim the George Washington lead to 48-45 at the 4:54 mark. The Colonials would pull away led by six points down the stretch by guard Elisa Aguilara to cruise to a 60-47 victory.
For the `Cats in the loss, Skeeters tallied 17 points on seven-of-13 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Barnes added six points and seven rebounds for Villanova, while freshman Trish Juhline scored eight.
Leading the Colonials to victory was Aguilara who finished with 15 points, and Kristeena Alexander who came off the bench to score 14 points and pull down eight rebounds.
The Wildcats will have 16 days off before resuming play on Dec. 29, against Drexel in the first game of the PNC Christmas Classic at 8:00 p.m.
