--David Heckard (Jr./ LB) Injured knee. Out for W&M.
TALLEY'S TENURE: Currently in his 14th season on the Main Line, head coach Andy Talley can feel responsible for every facet of the Villanova football program, having started it from scratch in 1985. In his 14 years at Villanova, Talley has recorded an 90-51-1 mark making him the all-time winningest coach in Villanova history. Talley's 19-year overall coaching record currently stands at 118-69-2. During his career as the Wildcat mentor, Talley has guided Villanova to five NCAA playoff appearances (1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1997) three Conference titles and one Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy. Last season, Talley garnered the Eddie Robinson Award and the AFCA/GTE National Coach of the Year.
A PERFECT 10: In just three games, sophomore running back Brian Westbrook has already recorded 10 touchdowns, becoming the fastest Wildcat to register 10 scores. The former fastest Villanova player to 10 touchdowns was wide receiver Brian Finneran who tallied 10 touchdowns in five games during the 1997 season. Of Westbrook's 10 scores, five have been rushing, four receiving and one on a kickoff return. Three games into his sophomore year, Westbrook has already scored 21 career touchdowns.
BIG PLAYS: Brian Westbrook has given new meaning to the term big play in 1998. Four of his 10 touchdowns have been of 40 yards or longer. In the season opener versus Pittsburgh, he scored on an 89-yard kickoff return and a 48-yard run off a fake punt. Last week at James Madison, Westbrook registered scoring catches of 69 and 72 yards. For his efforts last week against James Madison, he was named Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
ALL-PURPOSE BRIAN: After three games, sophomore running back Brian Westbrook has already tallied 1,063 yards of all-purpose offense for an average of 354.3 per game. The next closest player to him in the Atlantic 10 rankings is Connecticut's Tory Taylor with 402 all-purpose yards for an average of 201.0 yards per contest. Last week, Westbrook totaled 325 all-purpose yards against JMU. In the season opener at Pittsburgh,Westbrook recorded a school best 428 yards of all-purpose yardage. His lowest output of the season came versus Delaware when he recorded 310 all-purpose yards.
LEADING THE COUNTRY: Brian Westbrook has not only dominated the Atlantic 10 individual statistics, but he has also made a name for himself on the national scene. Entering play versus William & Mary, Westbrook leads the country in two categories and is second in two others. He leads in scoring (20.00 points per game) and all-purpose yardage (354.3). The next closest to him in all-purpose yardage is Tyrone Butterfield of Tennessee State who is averaging 225.50 per contest. Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech is the I-A leader with an average of 269.50 all-purpose yardage per game. Westbrook is second in the nation in receptions per game (9.67) and receiving yards per contest (130.33). He is also fourth in kickoff returns and seventh in punt returns.
RECORD SETTER: Just three games into his sophomore campaign, Brian Westbrook already owns eight Villanova school records with six of the eight being established this year. With two touchdowns this week, he will tie another Wildcat record for touchdowns by a sophomore with 12.
1.Rushing Yards by a Freshman (630 in 1997) 2.Points by a Freshman (72 in 1997) 3.Game Receptions by a Soph. (12 vs Del) 4.Game Receiving Yds by a Soph. (181 vs. JMU) 5.All-purpose Yards in a Game (428 vs. Pitt) 6.Highest Avg. Yards per Play (16.4 vs. Pitt) 7.Kickoff Return Yards in a Game (152 vs. Pitt) 8.First Player in school history to have two career kickoff returns for touchdowns
BODEN REACHES 1,000: In last week's win at James Madison, junior All-American quarterback Chris Boden went over the 1,000-yard passing mark for the year. After three games, Boden is 84-for-139 (60%) for 1,034 yards and six touchdowns. In 22 career games, Boden has amassed 5,072 yards and 50 touchdowns.
17 TO HIS CREDIT: Entering this season, Chris Boden had 14 Villanova school records, all of which were tallied in 1997, on his resume. Boden has picked-up right where he left off this year by already recording three school marks in 1998. Thus far this year, he has set school records for completions in a game (40 vs. Delaware), yards passing in a game (422 vs. Delaware) and total yards in a game (413 vs. Delaware).
WARD EMERGES: Much has been made about Villanova losing its receiving trio from a year ago that tallied 206 receptions for 3,054 yards and 29 touchdowns. In the last two weeks, sophomore Steve Ward has stepped-up his play and emerged as a receiving threat for the Cats. Last Saturday against James Madison, Ward made six catches for 144 yards including both a 55-yard reception and 48-yard garb. A week earlier versus Delaware, Ward recorded eight catches for 94 yards giving him 14 receptions for 238 yards in the last two weeks. For the season, Ward has 18 receptions for 277 yards.
OVERTIME HISTORY: Villanova's 34-31 overtime win against Delaware on Saturday, Sept. 12 was the Wildcats' first overtime game since Sept. 23, 1995 when James Madison edged the Cats 28-27 at Villanova Stadium. During Andy Talley's tenure as Villanova's head football coach, the Wildcats have participated in five overtime games and have tallied a 3-2 record. Four of the five overtime games have been played at Villanova Stadium.
11-STRAIGHT: Dating back to the final regular season game in 1996, Villanova has won 11-straight conference games. The last conference foe to defeat the Wildcats was New Hampshire on Nov. 9, 1996 by a score of 34-0.
OFFENSIVE OUTBURST: As has been the case the last couple of seasons, the Villanova offense continues to put up big numbers. After three contests this season, which included an opening game at I-A Pittsburgh, Villanova has amassed 1,385 yards for an average of 461.7 yards per game. Also, this year, Villanova has scored 109 points (36.3 ppg). Last season, Villanova scored 525 points for an average of 40.2 ppg. In 13 games a season ago, Villanova totaled 5,688 yards for an average of 437.5 per game.
MIRROR IMAGE: Villanova has scored 109 points this year for an average of 36.3 ppg, while they have given up 109 points for an average of 36.3 ppg.
COMEBACK KIDS: Dating back to the 1997 season, Villanova has trailed heading into the fourth quarter on five occasions and managed to win all five games. The following are the comeback wins:
9/13/97 Delaware 25, VU 17 end of 3rd Qtr. VU 35, Delaware 25 Final Score 11/8/97 UNH 20, VU 16 end of 3rd Qtr. VU 23, UNH 20 Final Score 11/22/97 N'eastern 28, VU 26 end of 3rd Qtr. PLAYING BY THE RULES: Thus far this year, Villanova has done a great job of not hurting themselves with penalties. In three games, the Cats have committed just seven penalties for 695 yards, while their opponents have had 24 penalties for 199 yards.
STRONG RETURNS: Villanova's kickoff return duo of Brian Westbrook and Ademole Turner have combined to return 13 kickoffs for 421 yards for an outstanding average of 32.7 yards per return. On the year, Westbrook has 11 returns for 360 yards (32.7 yards per return) and one score, while Turner has two returns for 61 yards (30.5 yards per return).
CALIFORNIA CONNECTION: Villanova definitely has a west coast flavor to its team by evidence of the 18 Californians that appear on the Wildcat roster. Of the 18, 10 are starters (six offense, four defense) with six others appearing on the depth chart.
LYONS LEADS THE CHARGE: For the second straight season, junior linebacker Shaun Lyons has emerged as Villanova's leading tackler. In three games this year, Lyons has made 45 total stops, including three tackles for loss. He is currently third in the Atlantic 10 in tackles. Last season, Lyons led Villanova in tackles with 113.
DOMINANT DUO: Villanova has two of the top defensive linemen in the Atlantic 10 Conference in seniors Chris Machovina and Jason Tenner. After three games, Tenner has 19 tackles and a sack, while Machovina has 17 tackles and three sacks. The two have made getting to the quarterback a habit during their careers on the Main Line. Together, Tenner and Machovina have combined to record 48 career quarterback sacks. Machovina, a native of Burke, Va., has registered 28 career sacks, including 12 last season, and Tenner, who hails from Cupertino, Calif., has amassed 20 career sacks. Last year, Tenner led the team with 15 quarterback sacks. Also, last season, Tenner made 13 tackles for loss, while Machovina recorded 12 tackles for loss.
SECONDARY CHANGES: Due to second team All-Conference performer Shannon Riley being sidelined at the beginning of the year with a knee injury, the Wildcats had to readjust the secondary. With Riley out of the first two games, Villanova started Braheem Powell and Ademole Turner at corner, along with DeLonne Kelly at free safety and Hezekiah Lewis at Riley's strong safety spot. Last week at James Madison, Riley returned to strong safety, with Lewis replacing Turner at corner.
OUT OF POSITION: Freshman place kicker Casey Hannon found himself in the wrong place on Saturday at James Madison. During a third quarter kickoff return, Hannon was forced to make a tackle on James Madison's Delvin Joyce. Hannon and Joyce met in a violent collision that resulted in Hannon having to be helped off the field with a sprained neck. After resting on the Wildcat bench, Hannon returned to kick Villanova's final extra point. Earlier in the game, Hannon was also in on a tackle on Joyce during a James Madison return. A week earlier, Hannon kicked the game winning field goal in overtime to help the Cats defeat the Delaware Blue Hens.
WILDCATS ON THE RADIO: Every Villanova football game this season will be carried live by the Villanova Football Radio Network. The flagship station for the Wildcats this season will be WFIL-AM 560. Also carrying Wildcat games in 1998 will be WJNN-FM 106.7 out of Cape May, N.J. Returning for his 12th season as Villanova's play-by-play man is Joe Eichhorn. Assisting Eichhorn in the booth and handling color analysis duties will be Ryan Fannon who has been part of the Wildcat broadcasting team for the last five seasons. .
SO LONG MAIN LINE: Following this week's game against William & Mary, Villanova will not play a game at Villanova Stadium for six weeks. Next week, the Cats travel to Maine before playing at Northeastern on Oct. 10. Following a bye week on Oct. 17, Villanova plays at Massachusetts on Oct. 24 and at Fordham on Oct. 31. Villanova's next appearance on the Goodreau Field turf is Nov. 7 versus Richmond.
TRANSFERS: There are four new members of the Wildcat squad who arrive on the Main Line after transferring from other schools. Three of the four transferred from Boston University after the school decided to drop its football program following the 1997 campaign. The three former Terriers include running back Roger Harriott and offensive linemen Craig Johnson and Matt Engel. All three will be juniors this fall and have two years of eligibility remaining. As a sophomore last year, Harriott rushed for 1,333 yards on 250 carries and seven touchdowns. The 1,333 yards rushing is the third highest single-season total in Boston University history. For his efforts, Harriott earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors and was named the Harry Agannis Memorial Award winner as the team's MVP. Engel and Johnson were both mainstays on the Boston University offensive line. Johnson was the starting left tackle after lettering as a defensive tackle in 1996, while Engel started at guard. Last season, Johnson garnered the Jim Hunt Award as the most improved player on the Terrier squad.
Engel was also honored last year, winning the Jim Meredith Award which is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies competiveness. The fourth transfer, Casey Hannon, comes to Villanova from Penn State where he spent one season. A native of Lebanon, N.J., Hannon was rated as the fourth best kicker in the country coming out of high school in 1996 by National Recruiting Adviser. Hannon, who has four years of eligibility remaining, will handle both the place kicking and kickoff duties.

POLL HISTORY: Before earning the nation's top spot on Oct. 27, 1997 Villanova's previous best ranking was during the 1992 season when the Wildcats were No. 2 for three weeks from Sept. 28-Oct. 12. At one point, beginning on Sept. 9, 1991, Villanova appeared in the national rankings for 25 consecutive weeks falling out early in the 1993 season. Villanova made its first showing in the I-AA poll on Oct. 9, 1988 when they appeared four consecutive weeks reaching as high as No. 15 on two occasions. In 1989, the Cats cracked the poll three times: 10/24 (No. 17), 10/30 (No. 11) and 11/20 (No. 16). After not appearing at all during both the 1994 and 1995 seasons, the Cats returned to the Top 25 on Sept. 16, 1996 with a No. 18 ranking. Villanova remained in the poll all season long, reaching as high as No. 9 on Oct. 14. This season, Villanova began the season unranked before cracking the Top 25 on Sept. 2 with a No. 18 ranking.
