VILLANOVA, Pa. - On Feb. 6-7, members of the Villanova Track & Field team competed at both the Delaware Invitational and the Butler Invitational, with the majority of the team participating at Delaware.
On the womens side at the Delaware Invitational, sophomores Charmaine Walker (So., Plainfield, N.J.) and Marlena Robinson (So., Rochester, N.Y.), along with freshman Sherese Price (Fr., Pleasantville, N.J.) led the Wildcat charge. Robinson captured the triple jump championship with a leap of 3911.50, while Walker claimed first place honors in the 60 meter high hurdles with a time of 8.35. Price was right behind Walker in second place in a time of 8.81. Price also ran well in the 60 meters, as she was clocked in 7.83 and finished in third position.
Leashia Rahr (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) and Meghan Courtney (So., Waterloo, N.Y.) also turned in fine performances on the track for the Wildcats. Rahr crossed the line in 57.52 to place second in the 400 meters, while Courtney finished fourth in the 3,000 meters in 10:43.60.
Besides Robinson in the triple jump, Villanova had five other individuals compete in the field events. Sarah Hunt (Jr., Langhorne, Pa.) was impressive in the weight throw finishing third with a throw of 5005.50. Melissa Guinivan (So., Maytown, Pa.) also took part in the weight throw, where she tallied a 19th place effort with a mark of 3606.75. Melinda Boykin (Jr., Maple Glen, Pa.) finished fourth in the shot put (4210.75), while Christa Heyward (Fr., Pine City, N.Y.) had a jump of 3305.75 to finish 17th in the triple jump. April Kotteles (So., Rockaway, N.J.) registered identical 12th place finishes in both the long and high jumps. She jumped 1607.00 in the long and 500.50 in the triple.
In mens results at Delaware, senior Coulby Dunn (Sr., Greentown, Pa.) was sensational as he won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:34.23. Dunn edged out William & Marys Gene Manner who was timed in 8:35.52. In the pole vault, Kevin Coyne (Sr., Springfield, Va.) was second with a height of 1503.00. Newcomer Antoine Johnson (Fr., Tuckahoe, N.Y.) also recorded a quality performance for the Cats, finishing seventh in the 60 meter high hurdles in a time of 8.37.
Three Villanova athletes including Scott Tantino (Jr., North Wales, Pa.), Carrie Tollefson (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) and Ann McGranahan (So., Pensacola, Fla.) made the trip to the midwest to compete at the Butler Invitational. Tollefson ran an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:18.43 to win the 3,000 meter run, while McGranahan was 23rd in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 17:35.35. Tantino ran well, placing seventh in the 3,000 meters with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 8:10.44.
