Track Travels to Durham

DURHAM, N.C. - On April 2-3, selected members of the Villanova men's and women's track & Field teams traveled to Durham, N.C. to compete in the Duke University Invitational.

Three of the six women who made the trip competed in the 1,500 meter run. Carrie Tollefson (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) led the Wildcat trio with a fourth place finish in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:22.57. Carmen Douma (Jr., Cambridge, Ontario) returned to the track after battling an injured leg and placed eighth in 4:25.92, while Kristen Nicolini (Sr., Annapolis, Md.) was clocked in 4:26.77 and finished 10th.

In the 800 meter run, Lony'e Johnson (Jr., Wilmington, Del.) ran 2:12.42 to finish 18th, while Jessica Franks (So., Lansdale, Pa.) tallied a 24th place effort in 2:13.41. In the 800 meter developmental run, Susan Billings (So., Berlin, N.J.) crossed the line in 2:26.21 to finish 18th.

On the men's side, Scott Tantino (Jr., North Wales, Pa.) turned in the best effort of the weekend, as he ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:03.47 to finish fourth in the 5,000 meter run. Tantino's time was 15 seconds better than his previous best of 14:18.66 which he also recorded at the Duke Invitational on April 5, 1998. Also running in the race with Tantino was Dean Smith (Jr., Baltimore, Md.) and Coulby Dunn (Sr., Greentown, Pa.). Smith earned 20th place in 14:31.91, while Dunn was timed in 14:46.07 and finished 33rd.

The Wildcats were also well represented in the 1,500 meter run. In the race, Ben Showers (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) placed 24th in 3:55.11, while Brock Butler (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) was clocked in 4:03.43 and finished 30th. In the 1,500 meter developmental race, Eric Reese (Fr,., Dushore, Pa.) tallied a 22nd place finish in 4:09.68.

The Villanova men and women both competed in the Distance Medley Relay. In women's action, the Wildcats finished third in 11:35.97. The team was comprised of Nicolini, Douma, Franks and Kristine Jost (Sr., Baltimore, Md.). The Villanova men registered a 13th place effort in 10:12.61. Running for the men were Butler, Showers, Shaun Stanton (So., Bronx, N.Y.) and Reese.

Next Saturday, April 10, the Wildcats will stay on the Main Line to compete in the Villanova Invitational. Joining Villanova at the meet will be Franklin & Marshall, Haverford, LaSalle, Penn State and Widener.
