Syracuse Downs Villanova to End `Cats' Five-Game Win Streak

In Big East Conference action on Wednesday, Jan. 19, in Syracuse, N.Y., the Villanova University women's basketball team lost to the Syracuse Orangewomen, 66-42, to end its five-game winning streak. With the loss, the Wildcats' fall to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the Big East, while the Orangewomen improve to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Villanova led 6-0 early on in the first half, on back-to-back three-pointers by junior center Brandi Barnes and freshman forward Katie Davis. Syracuse came back with a 16-2 run, to take a 16-8 lead with 10:31 remaining in the half. The Wildcats ended the half on a 6-2 run, but went into intermission with a 25-20 deficit.

The Orangewomen began the second half by outscoring Villanova 16-6 in the first 5:22 to grab a 41-26 advantage with 14:38 to play. Syracuse would cruise the rest of the way to win its first Big East game of the season, 66-42 over the Wildcats.

Leading Villanova in scoring in the loss was freshman guard Trish Juhline, who tallied 17 points on eight-of-17 shooting. Scoring in double figures as well was senior forward Jenea Skeeters, who shot four-of-seven for 11 points. Rounding out the Wildcat scoring were Davis with nine points and Barnes with five. Villanova shot 30 percent for the game on 16-of-53 from the field.

Anchoring the Orangewomen offense was Beth Record, who scored a game-high 18 points. Following Record's performance was Shannon Perry, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds. Syracuse shot 23-of-53 from the field for 43 percent in the game.

The Wildcats will get back into action on Saturday, Jan. 22, hosting the University of Connecticut at 12:00 p.m., at The Pavilion.
