Issue, Md. - The Villanova University golf team participated in the George Washington Invitational on April 2 and 3 in a field of 27 schools, coming away with a strong performance as the 'Cats finished in fourth place, just one stroke out of a three-way tie for second. Although the Villanova team did very well, shooting a two-day total of 618 (+42), it was senior golfer Dugan Condon (Rochester, N.Y./ Pittsford) who stole the show. The Big East All-Academic selection shot a 72 on Sunday and followed with a 75 on Monday as he won the whole tournament. His 147 (+3) was two shots better than a second place trio of golfers who each finished with a 149. The tournament first-place medal was the first of Condon's four-year career. Iona College won the team title with a 305-307--612 to best Providence and the University of Pennsylvania by five strokes.
Two other Villanova golfers had very fine performances of their own in helping lead the 'Cats at the Swan Point Yacht & Country Club. Senior Jeff Shookus (Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) shot a 155 (80-75) to finished tied for 19th place with teammate Garrett Feduke (Vestal, Vestal). Feduke, a junior, shot rounds of 82 and 73 to finish with his 155. Rounding out the scoring for Villanova were junior Chris Ellis (Boulder, Co./Kent Denver), who ended the tournament tied for 53rd with an 85-76-161, and freshman Joe Ryan (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid), who finished up with a 172 (87-85), good for a tie in the 110th spot.
