Villanova University today announced the Wildcat women's basketball schedule that will feature 27 regular season games. Villanova will play 16 Big East Conference games and 11 non- conference contests including two in-season tournaments. The 2000-2001 home slate will include three of last year's Final Four participants with Connecticut, Penn State and Rutgers coming to The Pavilion.
The Wildcats open the season on Friday, Nov. 17 at home against Penn State. This will mark the first time since 1993-94 that Villanova will open the regular season on its home court. Following the meeting with Penn State, Villanova will travel to Fairfield on Nov. 21 before heading south for the Thanksgiving holiday where the 'Cats will take part in the Florida International Tournament. Joining Villanova in the tournament will be three NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago including Youngstown State, Georgia State and host Florida International. The November portion of the schedule will conclude with a home date against LaSalle.
December will see the Wildcats play six games with three against Philadelphia Big Five opponents Temple, St. Joseph's and Pennsylvania. Villanova plays its first Big East game on Dec. 6 when they travel to Notre Dame. As they have in the past, Villanova will spend Christmas at home, hosting the Wildcat Christmas Classic with Howard, Northeastern and Bucknell entered in the field.
Following the first of the year, Villanova will play 16 games in January and February with 15 against Big East Conference opponents. The lone exception is on Saturday, January 13 when Villanova will host George Washington. Rutgers is scheduled to play at The Pavilion on Saturday, Jan. 20, while defending National Champion Connecticut will play at Villanova on Sunday, Feb. 18.
"We have a very challenging schedule this year. Our home portion of the schedule is very exciting as we will play three of last year's Final Four teams on our home court," said head coach Harry Perretta. "I think our schedule is as challenging as it has ever been."
