Game Notes:
STRONG PERFORMANCE: A big reason for Villanova's 63-54 win at Seton Hall on Saturday, Jan. 6 was the play of Wildcat senior center Brandi Barnes. In 33 minutes of action, Barnes tallied a career-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting to go with seven rebounds, a career-best four blocks, three steals and two assists. In the last five games, Barnes has tallied 88 points for an average of 17.6 ppg. in that span and she has reached the 20-point mark in three of the five contests.
CONFERENCE HONORS: For her efforts last week against West Virginia and Seton Hall, senior center Brandi Barnes was named Big East Conference Player of the week. In a 98-60 win over West Virginia, Barnes was 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points to go with four rebounds, three blocks and an assist. In a 63-54 victory at Seton Hall, she was 11-of-16 from the field for a career-high 28 points, in addition to tallying seven rebounds, a career-high four blocks, three steals and two assists. For the week, Barnes averaged 19.5 ppg., 5.5 rpg., and 3.5 blocks per contest.
LEADING THE WAY: After 13 games, Brandi Barnes leads Villanova in three categories including scoring (13.8 ppg.), rebounding (6.2 rpg.) and blocks with 15. From the field, Barnes is shooting 76-of-147 for 51.7 percent.
HOME STRETCH: Starting with Wednesday's game with Georgetown, Villanova will play four-straight games at home. Following the Georgetown game, the Wildcats will host George Washington on Saturday, Jan. 13. Next week, Villanova will take on Seton Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 20. The Rutgers game which is scheduled for a noon tipoff will be the Big East Conference television game of the week.
WILDCATS VERSUS NATION'S CAPITAL: Villanova will spend this week playing against the top two women's programs from Washington, D.C. After hosting Georgetown on Wednesday, Jan. 10 in a Big East contest at 7:30 p.m., the Wildcats will battle Atlantic 10 power George Washington on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. The George Washington game will be Villanova's final non conference contest of the 2000-2001 season.Last season, Villanova lost at both Georgetown (63-50) and George Washington (60-47).
MAIN LINE RETURN: When Villanova and Georgetown meet on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at The Pavilion, the game will be the Hoyas first at Villanova since the 1997-98 season. Due to the way the Big East schedule has been constructed, Villanova has battled the Hoyas once each of the last two seasons in Washington, D.C. In Georgetown's last trip to Villanova on Dec. 31, 1997, the Hoyas tallied a 69-54 win. In the all-time series between the schools, Villanova holds a 24-13 advantage.
REACHING 100: In last Saturday's win at Seton Hall, the Villanova Wildcats reached the century mark for made three-point field goals. After 13 games, the Wildcats are 103-of-286 (36.0 percent) from three-point land, while their opponents are just 31-of-127 for 24.4 percent. When you look at it in points, Villanova has outscored its opposition by 216 points at 309-93. The Wildcats are currently averaging 22.0 three-point field goal attempts, while they are making an average of 7.9 triples per contest.
DAILY DOUBLE: For the third-straight game last Saturday at Seton Hall, sophomore forward Katie Davis reached double figures in points. In 37 minutes of action versus the Pirates, Davis was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range for 15 points. In addition, Davis registered three assists, two steals, two rebounds and two steals. Her previous two double figure scoring games came against Howard (16 points) and West Virginia (14 points). For the year, Davis is averaging 9.6 ppg., 3.4 rpg. and 3.0 apg.
UNSELFISH PLAY: Villanova has been playing great team basketball all season long. After 13 games, the Wildcats have made 319 field goals and there have been assists on 243 of those field goals. In Saturday's win at Seton Hall, Villanova had an assist on 16 of its 24 field goals.
FLOOR LEADER: The person responsible for making the Villanova offense go is junior point guard Mimi Riley. Entering the Georgetown game on Jan. 10, Riley leads the team in assists (5.2 apg), is third in rebounds (4.7 rpg) and fourth in scoring (9.0 ppg). She has also been very good at the foul line where she has connected on 36-of-46 for 78.3 percent..
KEY CONTRIBUTOR: Freshman forward Courtney Mix (Perrysburg, Ohio) has emerged as one of Villanvova's top performers this season. Mix has played in all 13 games thus far this year and is averaging 5.9 ppg., 5.2rpg., 1.7 apg and she leads the `Cats in steals with 18 (1.4 spg.) in 22.7 minutes per game. Mix is also one of the team's top defenders. In her last outing at Seton Hall, Mix recorded seven points, six rebounds, four assists and a block in 29 minutes of action.After earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the PNC Wildcat Wildcat Classic, Mix was chosen as the Big East Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday, Jan. 1.
VILLANOVA PICKED SEVENTH: In the Big East Conference preseason Coaches poll, Villanova was chosen to finish seventh in the 14-member Big East Conference. FIRST APPEARANCE: After missing the first nine games, senior guard Megan Stewart rejoined the team on Dec. 29-30 for the PNC Wildcat Classic. In the tournament opener versus Bucknell, Stewart played three minutes and had one point. In the championship game against Howard, she played three minutes and tallied two rebounds and an assist. A native of Maroochydore, QLD, Australia, Stewart had a great opportunity to work the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia so she stayed at home down under for the first semester. A fifth-year senior, Stewart will graduate in May with a degree in comprehensive science.
