BLACKSBURG, VA-- On Tuesday, Jan. 23, the Villanova women's basketball team was defeated by Virginia Tech, as the Hokies overcame a seven-point deficit in the final 5:28 to top the No. 24 Wildcats 65-59. Tuesday night's loss was just the second in the last 10 games for Villanova, which drops to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big East. Virginia Tech improves to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play with the victory.
Despite shooting just 27 percent in the first half, the Wildcats found themselves down by just five points at the half, 29-24. Villanova began the second half strong, taking a 34-33 advantage with 16:46 to go in the contest.
The `Cats would go on to take their largest lead, 59-52, with 5:28 remaining in regulation. Villanova would not score again, however, as Virginia Tech ended the game on a 13-0 run en route to a 65-59 victory. Eight of the Hokies final 13 points came by way of the foul line.
Sophomore guard was outstanding for the Wildcats in the loss. Juhline scored a career-high 27 points- on eight-of-17 shooting from the field, four-of-10 from three-point range and a perfect seven-of-seven from the foul line- to go along with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Senior center Brandi Barnes posted her third double-double of the year for Villanova, recording 16 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Winding down the scoring for the Wildcats was Courtney Mix with six points (four rebounds) and Mimi Riley and Katie Davis each with five points.
Leading the way for Virginia Tech was Tere Williams, who scored a team-high 22 points. Amy Wetzel added 18 points, including 10-of-11 from the foul line. The Hokies shot 42.6 percent for the game, holding Villanova to 40 percent shooting. Virginia Tech also held the edge in second-chance points over the Wildcats, 22-8.
Villanova will resume play on Saturday, Jan. 27, traveling to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College at 1:00 p.m.
