VILLANOVA, PA-- On Saturday, Jan. 6, the Villanova women's basketball team traveled to South Orange, N.J., looking for its fifth consecutive victory, and emerged with a 63-54 win over the Seton Hall Pirates. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big East Conference. The Pirates fall to 9-5 overall on the year with the loss, and 2-1 in conference action.
Villanova took a 27-22 advantage into the half and started the second half of action on a 6-1 run to take a 33-23 lead with 17:22 remaining in the game. Seton Hall cut the Wildcat lead to five points with 8:47 left, before the `Cats took control once again. Sophomore forward Katie Davis hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to take a 46-38 lead with 8:27 remaining.
On the Pirates next possession, Villanova senior center Brandi Barnes blocked one of her career-high four shots. Wildcat point guard Mimi Riley came down court for a lay up to increase the Villanova advantage to 48-38 at the 7:59 mark. From there, Seton Hall never got closer than eight points, as the Wildcats went on for a nine-point victory.
Leading the way for the `Cats was Barnes, who tallied a career-high 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting, to go along with seven rebounds, four blocks, two assists and three steals. Scoring in double figures as well for Villanova was Davis, who posted 15 points on six-of-six shooting from the field and three-of-three from three-point range. She also added three assists, one block and two steals in the win.
Freshman Courtney Mix keyed the Wildcat effort as well, as she recorded seven points, six rebounds, four assists and one block in a career-best 29 minutes. Winding down the Villanova scoring was sophomore guard Trish Juhline with seven points, Riley with two points, five rebounds and two assists, and Nicole Druckenmiller and Stephanie Baker with two points apiece. The Wildcats shot 24-of-52 (46%) from the field and six-of-17 from three-point range.
For Seton Hall in the loss, Leslie Ardon had 21 points on nine-of-12 shooting. Ardon was the only Pirate scorer in double figures. Seton Hall shot 22-of-46 from the field (48%) from the game.
Villanova will get back into action on Wednesday, Jan. 10, hosting Georgetown at 7:30 p.m.
