In women's basketball exhibition play at the Jake Nevin Field House on Sunday, Nov. 4, the Villanova Wildcats defeated the New York Gazelles 93-52. The game was Villanova's first exhibition contest of the season.
Villanova raced to a 12-2 lead on four three-pointers, including three by junior guard Trish Juhline. Villanova increased its lead to 22-6 at the 14:17 mark before the Gazelles cut the margin to 22-13 with 12:09 to play in the first stanza. From that point, the 'Cats would use a 22-11 run over the next seven minutes to lead 44-24 with just over five minutes remaining until intermission. Of the 22 points in the spurt, eight were scored by senior point guard Mimi Riley.
The Wildcats, who made 9-of-15 from behind the arc and 16-of-24 from the foul line in the first half, went to intermission leading 59-31.
Villanova started the second half on a 16-5 run to take a commanding 75-38 advantage with 15:53 remaining in the game. The Wildcats would lead by as many as 48 at 93-45 before recording the 93-52 victory.
Junior Katie Davis led Villanova with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting including a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range. Juhline finished with 15 points to go with nine assists and four steals, while Riley had 13 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Wildcats was freshman center Jana Rediger who netted 10 points. Sophomore forward Courtney Mix pulled-down a game-best 14 rebounds.
Villanova shot 41.7 percent from the field and connected on 15-of-35 from behind the arc, while the Gazelles shot 36.2 percent for the game. Villanova out-rebounded the Gazelles 48-34. The Gazelles were led in scoring by Teakyta Barnes with 14 points.
The Wildcats will play their second and final exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 11 when they face the Houston Jaguars at The Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
