Villanova Upends UConn, 74-60

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Gary Buchanan scored 21 points and extended his record-breaking free throw shooting, and seldom-used freshman forward Andreas Bloch hit all four of his 3-point shots in the second half, as Villanova defeated Connecticut 74-60 Saturday.

Michael Bradley had 16 points and Jermaine Medley 13 for Villanova (14-8, 5-5 Big East). Medley suffered a knee injury with 5:06 left in the game and did not return.

Johnnie Selvie had 15 points and Caron Butler had 12 for University of Connecticut (15-8, 4-6).

After Connecticut took a 51-50 lead with 5:39 remaining, on a jumper by Tony Robertson, the Wildcats ran off 12 straight points, including two treys by Bloch. The second was made as the shot clock was running down, giving Villanova a 62-51 advantage. Bloch had averaged only 3 1/2 minutes a game and had only taken 12 shots all season.

Buchanan then hit six straight free throws, extending his streak to 73 in a row - a Division I record. He is 81 for 82 on the season.

The teams battled evenly in the first half with the Huskies taking the biggest lead, 24-18, with 5:56 remaining. UConn held a 31-27 lead at the break, and outrebounded Villanova 25-16, including a 14-3 margin at the offensive end.
