PITTSBURGH, PA-- On Wednesday, Feb. 14, the Villanova women's basketball team traveled to Pittsburgh, Pa., and emerged with a lopsided 73-44 victory over the University of Pittsburgh. With the win, the 25th ranked Wildcats improve to 18-6 overall on the season, and 9-4 in Big East Conference play. The victory was the `Cats' 13th in the last 16 games. The Panthers fell to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in conference action with Wednesday night's loss.
Villanova took a 28-18 lead into intermission, but saw its lead trimmed to eight points, 32-24, with 17:07 to go in the second half. The Wildcats went on a 17-5 run in the next 6:09, however, to claim a 49-29 lead with 10:58 remaining. Sophomore guard Trish Juhline scored all eight of her points during the Villanova run, including two three-pointers. From there, Pittsburgh would not get within 16 points the rest of the way, as the Wildcats went on for a 73-44 victory.
Leading the way for Villanova was senior center Brandi Barnes, who scored 14 points on seven-of-11 shooting. Scoring in double-figures as well for the Wildcats were freshman Courtney Mix with 13 points (six-of-seven shooting) and seven rebounds, and redshirt freshman Jeanine Johnson who scored a career-high 12 points on five-for-five shooting.
Winding down the Villanova scoring were Juhline with eight points, Nicole Druckenmiller with seven points, Mimi Riley with six points (and five assists), Megan Stewart with four points, and Lauren Pellicane, Stephanie Baker and Katie Davis with three points apiece. Dishing out a career-high six assists was freshman guard Brandi Harris.
For the Panthers in the loss, Laine Selwyn was the only Pittsburgh player in double-figures with 14 points. The Wildcats held Pittsburgh to 15-of-47 shooting (31.9 percent) for the game, while Villanova shot 57.1 percent (32-of-56) from the field, and 46.2 percent (six-of-13) from three-point range.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Sunday, Feb. 18, as they play host to the No. 3 ranked Connecticut Huskies at 12:00 p.m. The game will be televised live on Comcast SportsNet, and can also be heard live on WFIL 560 AM.
