NOTRE DAME, IND. - On Friday, Sept. 21, at Alumni Field in Notre Dame, Ind., the Villanova University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to the No. 4 nationally ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 2-1, in double overtime. The loss was the Wildcats' second one-goal defeat to the Irish in as many years, as Villanova fell to Notre Dame, 1-0, on the Main Line one season ago. Friday night's defeat was the Wildcats first loss of the season, dropping them to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Big East Conference play. The Fighting Irish improve to 4-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action with the win.

The two teams combined for only eight shots in the first half, as the game went into intermission scoreless. Villanova senior goalkeeper Janel Schillig stopped two shots in the first half for the `Cats.

With the contest still scoreless at the 76:24 mark, Notre Dame put the game's first goal on the scoreboard. Taking a pass from Amanda Guertin, Amy Warner faked out Schillig and found the back of the net to give the Irish a 1-0 lead.

Trailing 1-0 with just over three minutes left in the contest, the Wildcats found some late game magic. Villanova freshman Laura Johnson sent a crossing pass to junior Quinn Sellers in the middle of the field. Finding an opening, Sellers blasted a shot past Notre Dame goalkeeper Elizabeth Wagner to tie the game at 1-1. Sellers' score, her fifth goal of the season, sent the game into its first overtime period.

Schillig was masterful in the first extra session for the `Cats, saving four shots to send the game into a second overtime period. At the 114:11 mark, 9:49 into the second overtime, the Irish put the game away. Warner scored her second goal of the game off assists from Randi Scheller and Monica Gonzalez to give Notre Dame the 2-1 victory.

Schillig saved 10 shots for Villanova in the loss, while Wagner stopped one shot to get the win for the Irish.

The Wildcats will now travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to face the Butler University Bulldogs on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1:00 p.m.
