Wildcat Tennis Gains Second Consecutive Victory

Villanova, Pa.--On Tuesday, Sept. 25, the Villanova Men's Tennis team kept moving in the right direction recording their second consecutive victory on the 2001 season. The Wildcats defeated La Salle University, 6-1, as five different Villanova players picked up individual wins. The 'Cats were led by senior captain, A.J. Rohde (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Point South), who defeated La Salle's Ryan Gargullo in three sets and junior Ryan Devine (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh South) who picked up a two-set victory at No. 3 singles.

Other players victorious for Villanova included junior Justin Goulet (Yardley, Pa./ Holy Ghost Prep) and freshmen Aaron Kuzsa (Walingford, Conn./Cheshire Academy) and Ricardo Baraldi (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons). Kuzsa, playing at the No. 4 singles slot, shut out La Salle's Sajeel Qureshi in the first set and then went on to close out the match with a final score, 6-0, 7-5. Goulet and Baraldi also picked up consecutive set victories improving their respective season records to 1-0 and 3-1.

In doubles action, sophomores John Toppel (Los Altos, Calif./Bellarmine Prep) and Lucas Kaster (Minneapolis, Minn./De La Salle) teamed up to defeat La Salle's Ron and Ryan Gargullo, 8-3 while Andy O'Neil (Wayne, Pa./Arcadia) and Sean Gallagher (Fort Wayne, Ind./Shawnee) won their match by a final score of 8-1. La Salle picked up their sole doubles victory as Karim Rahimtoola and Qureshi defeated Villanova's Andy Herron (Ponte Verde Beach, Fla./Great Valley) and Kusza, 8-4.

With the victory, the Wildcats improve their overall season record to 2-0 on the year.

Villanova will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they host the St. John's Red Storm in a Big East contest.
