VILLANOVA, PA. - In the first round of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championships on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Villanova Soccer Complex, the 20th ranked Villanova women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Yale, 1-0, on penalty kicks. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation or either of the 10 minute overtime periods so the contest went to a shootout where the Bulldogs out-shot the Wildcats four to two in penalty kicks.
With the loss, Villanova ends the season with an overall record of 14-3-4. The `Cats tied the school record for victories in a season set in 1999. Yale advanced to Sunday's NCAA second round with the win, where they will face Nebraska at 1:00 p.m. at the Villanova Soccer Complex. Nebraska defeated Hartford, 2-0, in Friday's other first round contest to advance to the second round.
Yale came out strong to begin the contest, but Villanova picked it up on the offensive end and outplayed the Bulldogs in the first half. The Wildcats took a 13-7 shot advantage into intermission but the game went scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play. The two goalkeepers, Chrissy Dolan of Villanova and Lindsay Sabel of Yale, combined to stop 13 shots in the first half. Sable saved nine shots in the first half, but Dolan made several acrobatic stops including a diving stop to just knock away a Bulldog shot late in the first half.
The defenses stepped up in the second half as both teams could manage only 11 total shots with neither squad able to find the net.
Both Yale and Villanova had several chances in each of the two extra sessions but both were unsuccessful in putting in the game-winner, so the game went into a shootout.
The contest would be decided on penalty kicks with each team having five chances to scored on alternating shot attempts. The Bulldogs Ali Cobbett was successful on her first try to give Yale a one-shot advantage. Villanova's Candice MacDonald followed with a shot that was deflected by Bulldog keeper Sabel but somehow found the back of the net.
Chandra King of Yale and the Wildcats' Laura Johnson alternated successful scores on each team's next attempt to tie it at two. The Bulldogs went ahead 3-2 on a shot into the right corner of the net by Laurel Karnes, and maintained their lead as Sabel stopped a shot by defender Michelle Biehl on Villanova's next attempt.
Yale extended its advantage to 4-2 on a shot by Lee Anne Jasper which proved to be the game-winner as Sabel saved a shot by Wildcat forward Janessa Jeltema.
Jasper's game-winner gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 victory and improved their season record to 12-4-2.
