NEW ORLEANS, LA. - In front of 2,319 fans at Turchin Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 16, the Villanova baseball team was defeated in game two of a three game weekend series by the No. 6 nationally ranked Tulane Green Wave, 9-2. The Wildcats fall to 0-2 overall on the season with the loss, while the Wave improves to 3-2.

In the bottom of the first inning, Jon Kaplan walked, advanced to second on a groundout and moved on to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to James Jurries, Mike Aubrey hit a sacrifice fly to score left field to score Kaplan and give the Green Wave a 1-0 advantage. A RBI single to center by Scott Madden later in the inning increased the Tulane lead to 2-0 after one inning.

After getting through the second and third innings unharmed, Villanova starter Tom Kandybowicz ran into some trouble in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, Kaplan hit a sacrifice fly scoring Brian Bormaster with the Wave's third run of the contest. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Green Wave chased Kandybowicz who gave way to senior right-hander Bob Grzenda. The first run came on a double steal as Wildcat catcher Marshall Canosa overthrew third base allowing Aubrey to score. A RBI double by Turner Brumby and a sac fly by Roydell Williams helped pad the Green Wave lead to 6-0 after five innings of play.

Tulane added one unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Bormaster reach base on an error by Brian Trotta and scored later on in the inning on a RBI single by Williams to give the Green Wave a 7-0 lead.

Villanova broke up Tulane pitcher Nick Bourheois' shutout attempt in the eighth inning, as freshman Dustin Downs posted a two-run pinch-hit single to help the Wildcats close to within five runs at 7-2.

That was as close as Villanova would come as the Green Wave scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Tulane went on to a 9-2 victory.

Bourgeois got the win on the mound for the Green Wave to improve to 1-0. He pitched eight innings, giving up two runs on two hits, walking five and striking out eight.
