WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Wednesday, Feb. 20, in a Big East Conference matchup in Washington D.C., the Villanova women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 59-46, for its fourth straight victory and sixth in the last eight games. With the win, the Wildcats improved to 16-9 overall and 10-4 in Big East play. The Hoyas fell to 12-14 overall and 4-10 in conference action with the loss.
In the first half, Villanova took a 10-9 lead on a Nicole Druckenmiller three-pointer with 15:35 remaining. The Wildcats would lead the rest of the half and take a 36-25 advantage into intermission.
In the second half, Georgetown cut the Villanova lead to 41-38 at the 12:51 mark. From there, the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run to claim a commanding 51-40 lead with 7:16 left in the contest. In the run, sophomore forward Courtney Mix had five points on a three-pointer and a layup, while junior guard Trish Juhline had a three-pointer, and senior point guard Mimi Riley added a layup.
Villanova would lead by double-figures the rest of the way, en route to a 59-46 victory. Juhline led the Wildcat with 18 points on seven-of-14 shooting from the field and four-of-nine from three-point range. With her fourth three-pointer of the game, Juhline set a new Villanova school record for career three-pointers with 190, breaking the old mark of 189 held by Sue Glenning who played for the `Cats from 1992-96.
Other standouts for Villanova on Wednesday night were Mix with 11 points (five-for-eight FG) and nine rebounds, senior center Stephanie Baker with a game-high 11 boards, Druckenmiller with six points and Katie Davis with four points. The Wildcats shot 22-of-56 (39%) from the field and nine-of-29 from three-point range (31%). Villanova out-rebounded Georgetown 39-30.
For the Hoyas, Rebekkah Brunson led the way with 15 points. Georgetown shot 18-of-50 from the field in the contest.
