Wildcats Split Big East Softball Double-Header With Boston College

VILLANOVA, PA. ----- On Saturday, April 6, in a Big East softball double-header at Villanova Softball Field, the Villanova Wildcats (20-6 overall, 3-3 Big East) split a pair with the Boston College Eagles (12-17 overall, 3-3 Big East). The Wildcats exploded for 11 hits in game one as they cruised to a 9-1 victory. Game two featured a pitching duel with the Eagles rallying to score the only run of the game in the top of the ninth inning for a 1-0 victory to earn the split.

Game #1: Boston College 1, VILLANOVA 9 (6 inn.)
In game one the Wildcats jumped all over the Eagles early and often scoring six runs in the first two innings. After holding Boston College scoreless in the top of the first, Villanova capitalized on a few Eagle miscues allowing the 'Cats to grab a 2-0 lead. Freshman Krissy Yauch (Tucson, Ariz.), was hit by a pitch in the first at bat of the game for Villanova and scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Sara Carlson (Langley, B.C.). Sophomore Robin Flier (Lafayette, Calif.) reached base on a single and scored the second Wildcat run on an errant throw from the Boston College catcher.

Villanova added to its lead in the second inning plating four runs on four hits. After loading the bases with two outs, Carlson had an infield RBI single followed by a RBI double by Lisa Krueger (Mission Viejo, Calif.). At the end of two complete innings of play Villanova led 6-0. Krueger went on to finish the day with two hits, three RBI and a run scored.

Boston College scored its first and only run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double from Jacqui Goodchild (West Hills, Calif.).

Villanova added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the game ended due to the eight-run rule. Flier started the rally with a leadoff single, her third hit of the afternoon. Heather Garboden (Beaverton, Ore.), Krueger, and Allison Wisniewski (Smithtown, N.Y.) all had one RBI in the sixth. Wisniewski's single up the middle allowed Krueger to score giving the Wildcats an eight run advantage to seal the victory.

Hornick pitched 4 1/3 innings allowing one earned run on two hits as she picked up her ninth win on the year. Freshman Kristen Haynes (Faifax, Calif.) relieved Hornick in the fifth inning. Haynes struck out three batters in 1 2/3 innings.

Game #2: Boston College 1, VILLANOVA 0 (9 inn.)
Game two featured a pitching duel between two of the top pitchers in the Big East: Hornick (Villanova) and Tekae Malandris (Boston College).

Malandris silenced the Wildcat bats and pitched her third complete-game shutout of the season scattering three hits in nine innings of work. Malandris faced 29 batters, just two over the minimum. Hornick, who is 9-4 on the year, threw 8 1/3 innings allowing just three hits, two to Boston College junior Cara Blumfield (West Hills, Calif.).

The Eagles scored the only run of the game in the top of the ninth inning. Blumfield led off with a double to center field. The Eagles third baseman Lisa Fischer (Coopersburg, Pa.) drove an RBI single up the middle for the Eagles only run.

Villanova hosts Providence College in another Big East double-header on Sunday, April 7, at Villanova Softball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
