Late Inning Rally Leads Softball To Split Against Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Villanova University softball team overcame a four run deficit in the second game of their double header against Boston College en route to a 10-7 victory and a split of the doubleheader. With the split, Villanova's record stands at 10-8-1 overall and 3-2 in Big East play.

In the first game, the Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run homer from Jennifer Asbury. Boston College added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and rounded out their scoring on a solo homer from Lisa Fisher in the bottom of the fifth.

The Wildcats would get two runs back in the top of the sixth when junior centerfielder Lisa Krueger lined her third home run of the season over the centerfield fence. The blast scored Robin Flier, who had singled to left. Villanova was unable to push any more runs across, falling 5-2.

In the nightcap, the Eagles again led off the scoring when Erin Mackey connected for a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning.

Ricci Lugo got Villanova on the board with her first homer of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence.

Boston College would answer for two more runs, taking a 6-1 lead into the top of the sixth inning. The Wildcats put another run on the board in the sixth when Krueger walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sarah Wall then stepped to the plate and roped a single to right field, scoring Krueger.

One inning later, Villanova rallied back to take a 7-6 lead on a two-RBI single by Wall. Pinch hitter Kristen Strait started the rally with a single up the middle and Kristin Leese came on to run. Lugo then singled to right. Flier singled to the pitcher, loading the bases. Krueger ripped a single through the right side, scoring Leese. Sara Carlson stepped to the plate and delivered a two-RBI single off the base of the left field wall, plating Flier and Lugo. A Kari Koller walk loaded the bases, bringing Wall to the plate. Wall again came through with a clitch hit, driving a single off the center field wall, scoring Krueger and Carlson and giving Villanova its first lead of the afternoon.

Boston College tied the game on an RBI single from Mackey, forcing the game into extra innings.

Neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities in the eigth inning, but Villanova took control of the game in the top of the ninth. Krueger and Koller both drew walks and Wall ripped a single off the Eagle third baseman's glove, allowing Krueger to score. Allison Wisniewski ripped a single over the centerfielder's head, scoring Koller and advancing Wall to third. Wall then scored on a passed ball, putting Villanova on top 10-7.

Wall finished the game with four runs batted in.

Shannon Williams came on to hold the Eagles scoreless for the last two innings, picking up her third win of the season.

Villanova gets back into action on Tuesday when they host Lafayette for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00PM.
