VILLANOVA, PA. - Rutgers scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half to defeat the 18th ranked Villanova women's soccer team, 2-0, on Friday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who fell to 9-2-0 overall on the year and 3-1-0 in the BIG EAST. The Scarlet Knights improved to 6-5-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play with Friday's victory.
Rutgers caught a break in the 18th minute of play leading to the first goal of the game. Villanova freshman defender Kayce Blandford tried to clear the ball out of the box, but her pass was intercepted by Scarlet Knight midfielder Tierney Brady. Brady beat Wildcat goalkeeper Jillian Loyden for her first goal of the season, giving Rutgers the early 1-0 advantage.
Just 2:32 later, the Scarlet Knights added to their lead. Rutgers forward Christine Wentzler found Carli Lloyd with a centering pass to the top of the box and Lloyd blasted a shot by Loyden to increase the Scarlet Knight lead to 2-0. Lloyd's goal was her seventh of the 2004 season.
The Wildcats had numerous scoring opportunities in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Rutgers goalkeeper Robyn Jones saved four shots in net to record the 2-0 shutout for the Scarlet Knights.
Taking the loss in goal for Villanova was Loyden, who stopped six shots on the afternoon.
The Wildcats will get back into action on Sunday, Oct. 3, traveling to Jamaica, N.Y., to take on the St. John's Red Storm at 1:00 p.m.
