TOP STORIES

Through the first five games of the 2004-05 season defense has been the watchword at Villanova. The Wildcats are limiting opponents to 46.8 ppg and .321 shooting from the field. In addition, foes are converting just .215 of their 3-point field goal attempts against VU. Villanova is No. 1 in the country in points allowed and field goal percentage defense.

Foul trouble limited Allan Ray to just 22 minutes in Villanova's most recent action, a 68-47 victory over Fordham on Dec. 14. Ray now needs 21 points to join the 1,000-point club at Villanova.

Villanova has been idle since Dec. 14 to concentrate on exams. This is an annual custom and the Wildcats have managed to overcome any possible rust accumulated in that span in recent years. VU has won five of its last six games played following the break for exams, including all five played at the Pavilion. The only defeat came at Dayton in 2002, when the Flyers edged the `Cats 80-78 on a field goal in the waning seconds.

The `Cats will take a short break for the Christmas holiday and then return to action here against Middle Tennessee State on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
