Final Stats

VILLANOVA, PA. - The Villanova softball team continued its recent success against Philadelphia-area opponents, sweeping a doubleheader from La Salle on Tuesday at the Villanova Softball Field by scores of 8-0 and 8-1. The Wildcats banged out 30 hits, led by senior first baseman Kari Koller's 5-for-6 effort, which included two home runs.

Koller's blasts, her fifth and sixth of the season, came in the fourth and sixth innings of game two in support of winning pitcher Kristen Haynes (8-7). Koller finished the nightcap 3-for-3 with two home runs, a walk, three runs scored and five RBI. Her first home run was a three-run shot, the second was solo. Haynes pitched four innings of one-hit ball, before giving way to Tiffany Ross, whose three innings of relief earned her the first save of her Main Line career.

Eight of the nine Villanova starters had base hits in game two, and four of those players - Koller, Robin Flier, Allie Wisniewski and Krissy Yauch - posted multiple-hit performances. Wisniewski's day included a two-RBI triple in the sixth inning.

The 'Cats had six players with at least two hits in the first game: Koller, Wisniewski, Ricci Lugo, Sarah Wall, Sheri Donley and Veronica Alvarez. Every starter had at least one hit in the six-inning shutout hurled by Shannon Williams (15-9) and Ross. Williams did not allow a hit in four-plus innings of work.

The game ended early when Donley singled home Cassie Koenig in the bottom of the sixth for an eight-run advantage.

'Nova out-hit the Explorers 30-3 on the afternoon, and La Salle did not have a base runner reach second base until the sixth inning of the second game. The Wildcats also took advantage of five La Salle errors on the day.

With the victories, Villanova improves to 23-16 overall on the year, while La Salle drops to 9-26. Since the 2000 season, the Wildcats are 37-6-1 (.860) against local rivals Drexel, La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph's and Temple.

VU returns home on Wednesday, Apr. 21, for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against the Delaware Blue Hens of the Colonial Athletic Association.
