Softball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader Versus UCONN

STORRS, Conn. — The Villanova softball team lost two in a doubleheader versus UCONN Friday. 

The 'Cats (8-29, 4-10 BIG EAST) were within two runs of the Huskies (15-22, 8-3) in game one, but were run-ruled in five innings in the second. 

Game One: Villanova 3. UCONN 5

Lexi Kobryn (L, 2-10) got the start for Villanova, pitching two innings, striking out one, walking one and giving up five runs on five hits. Kobryn scored the loss. 

UCONN scored the game's first five runs, with three in the first and two in the third. 

The 'Cats responded in the fourth on Grace Reed's fourth home run of the season, a lined shot over the left field wall to make it 5-1. 

VU added two more in the fifth, starting out with a Maddie Burrows double which scored Ava Mahnken from first before Madison Ostrowski scored Burrows from third on a sacrifice fly to left to make it 5-3. 

Carly Zych pitched four shutout innings in relief, walking two and striking out one. 

Game Two: Villanova 1, UCONN 9 (5 Inn.)

Maggie King (L, 1-4) picked up the start in the second game, pitching three innings, walking two, striking out one and giving up three runs on five hits. King took the loss in the contest. 

VU struck early on a Mackenzie Waghorn RBI single to left which brought across Lilly St. Jean to score. The 1-0 lead was the 'Cats first and only lead of the day. 

The Huskies scored three runs in the bottom of the third to go back ahead 3-1.

UCONN walked off the game in the bottom of the fifth scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth, 

Maranda Runco pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, walking three, and giving up five runs on two hits. Sophia Mount entered in the fifth, giving up a run on a hit. 

In her return to the 'Cats following a brief injury stint, Burrows went 3-7 in both games with an RBI.

Up Next

Villanova closes the series with the Huskies at 3 p.m. at Burrill Family Field. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and StatBroadcast.
