VILLANOVA, Pa. - At halftime of Saturday's men's basketball game between Villanova and Georgetown, the Wildcats will retire a jersey in honor of longtime coach Rollie Massimino. During halftime ceremonies that will also honor the 1985 national championship team, Massimino will be honored for his accomplishments at Villanova.
During a distinguished career on the Main Line from 1973-1992, Massimino notched 357 victories, none more memorable than the Wildcats upset of Georgetown in the 1985 national championship game. In 19 years as head coach, Massimino led 11 teams to the NCAA Tournament, and made five appearances in the Elite Eight. Overall, Villanova was 20-10 in the NCAA Tournament during Massimino's tenure.
Massimino helped create an outstanding reputation for Villanova athletes off the court as well, as he guided all 59 of his players who played four years to meaningful college degrees. He is now based in Jupiter, Fla., where he serves as a consultant.
Tipoff for Saturday's game against Georgetown is 2 p.m. at The Pavilion.
