TOP STORIES

In claiming its third Big East season opener in head coach Jay Wright's four years at the helm against West Virginia on Wednesday evening, Villanova recorded several superlatives. The 84-46 triumph represented the largest Villanova margin of victory in a Big East game. It also set a record for the fewest points allowed in a Villanova Big East Conference victory. Finally, it was the largest Villanova margin of victory since an 87-49 victory over Howard in December of 1998.

The cornerstone of Villanova's 8-1 start is defense. The Wildcats limited No. 23 West Virginia to 15-of-55 shooting from the floor on Wednesday (.273). In addition, the Mountaineers, who were averaging 10 made 3-point field goals per game, converted just 6-of-29 (.207). In four of its nine games this season, Villanova has held its foe to less than 50 points and it allows only 53.1 ppg and an opponent field goal percentage of .353.

Villanova takes its act back out on the road again on Tuesday night, when the `Cats travel to Providence to face the Friars. Game time at the Dunkin Donuts Center is 7:30 p.m. The game will be carried on WFMZ-TV in the Philadelphia area and on WNTP Radio (990 AM).
