VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova senior forward Curtis Sumpter (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin High School) re-injured his left knee in practice on Wednesday and is expected to undergo surgery on the knee in early November. He is sidelined indefinitely.
Sumpter originally injured the knee in Villanova's NCAA Tournament second round victory over Florida on March 20. An examination following Sumpter's return to Villanova revealed that he had suffered a torn ACL. He underwent surgery on the knee on April 15.
"This is obviously a devastating injury for Curtis and our program," said Villanova head coach Jay Wright. "Fortunately, Curtis is incredibly strong, physically and emotionally. I know he will bounce back stronger and better than ever."
No determination has been made on Sumpter's status for the 2005-06 season according to Wright.
"We will monitor Curtis' recovery over the next few months," Wright stated. "We plan to be very cautious as we move ahead. This is an incredibly gifted young man and he will be given as much time as he needs to fully recuperate."
