VILLANOVA, Pa. - Junior forward Curtis Sumpter (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin High School) underwent successful surgery today to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The surgery was performed by Villanova team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rob Good at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
"The surgery on Curtis' knee went as planned," stated Good. "Everything looked solid at the conclusion of the surgery. There will be a significant amount of rehabilitation for Curtis this summer."
Sumpter will wear a brace for the next four weeks. Rehabilitation on the knee begins on Monday.
"I'm very happy for Curtis that the surgery went well," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. "We have great confidence in Dr. Good and in Curtis' work ethic. I know Curtis is very eager to begin the recovery process."
Sumpter played an integral role in Villanova's 24-8 season, averaging 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in 2004-05. He was named second team All-Big East and first team All-Philadelphia Big Five. The injury to his left knee was sustained in VU's second round NCAA Tournament victory over Florida on March 20.
