VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats (5-1) shut out the West Chester Golden Rams (4-3) 2-0 Wednesday night at Villanova Stadium. Junior goalkeeper, Erin Scott (West Chester East/Malvern, Pa.), posted her first shut out of the season and fourth of her collegiate career.
The `Cats' scoring run was sporadic and then subsided for the rest of the game, but it still proved to be too much for West Chester to overcome. Junior Sara Schmidt (Wilmington Friends/Mullica Hill, N.J.) tallied her second goal of the season at 10:27 in the first half taking a pass from senior captain, Rory Rogers (Sacred Heart Academy/Rosemont, Pa.).
Just one minute later, leading scorer, Megan Foster (Bishop Eustace/Berlin, N.J.), made a run at the cage after Catherine Somits (West Chester East/West Chester, Pa.) shot her a nice ball in the middle of the circle for the goal.
This was the end of the scoring in the period and in the game as the `Cats held onto to their 2-0 lead in the second half to be victorious. At the final whistle, Villanova had nineteen shots and five penalty corners while West Chester registered eight shots and four penalty corners.
Senior keeper, Carrie Hanshue, was credited with seven saves and took the loss for the Rams while Scott earned the "W". The win also broke West Chester's four-game win streak.
The Wildcats begin Big East play this weekend at UConn where they will take on the 2004 champ. The Huskies are currently also 5-1. Villanova is back on the Main Line after a four-game road trip on Friday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m.
