VILLANOVA, Pa.-- Men's Basketball Game Notes for Sunday afternoon's game between No. 3 Villanova (10-0, 1-0 Big East) and No. 24 West Virginia (9-3, 1-0 BE). VILLANOVA TOP STORIES
Villanova defeated Louisville 76-67 on Thursday in its Big East Conference opener to improve to 10-0 on the season. It is the best start for the Wildcats since the 1961-62 squad began the campaign with 12 consecutive wins. The 10-game winning streak is the longest in a single season since the 1994-95 squad reeled off 11 straight wins.
Including its 10 victories in 2005-06, the Wildcats are 22-7 (.759) all-time when ranked in the top five of the AP poll. Prior to its most recent stint, Villanova last appeared in the top five during the 1995-96 season. The Wildcats moved up to the No. 3 spot in both polls on Dec 12. The last time the Wildcats were ranked this high in the AP poll came on Dec. 11, 1995, when they were No. 2.
The Wildcats have grown accustomed to performing with a lead in 2005-06. Villanova has held the edge for 367:26 of the 400 minutes it has played thus far in 2005-06. Villanova gained the lead 34 seconds into the game at Louisville and never surrendered it.
Villanova and West Virginia staged an exciting duel in their last confrontation at the 2005 Big East Tournament. The Mountaineers pulled out a 78-76 win in the semifinals. VU has won five of the seven meetings between the two schools at the Pavilion.
