Villanova, Pa. - As she has over the past couple weeks, Villanova senior Sheri Donley continued to lead the Wildcats at the plate on Tuesday. She led off the top of the sixth inning with her eighth home run of the season to break a 1-1 tie with the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks. The hit also improved her hit streak to 15 games, the longest by a Wildcat this season.
The towering shot was hit down the left field line and hit the foul pole as it crossed the fence.
Laura Determan (13-11) would put the finishing touches on her 16th complete game of the season in the seventh inning to secure the 2-1 win for the Wildcats (22-21-1).
Determan would allow one run on six hits while issuing four walks and striking out seven. She was able to work around the hits and walks by making some very good pitched when she needed to, forcing the Mountain Hawks (30-16-1) to strand ten runners on base while the `Cats left just three.
Villanova got the tying run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Meghan Morese. Cassie Koenig opened the inning with a double and then advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jess O'Boyle. Megan Hord would come in to pinch run, which would pay dividends on the sacrifice fly, as it was a shallow fly to right field.
Donley entered her decisive at bat in the sixth with her 14-game hit streak in jeopardy after a groundout and a lineout earlier in the game. She is batting .473 with six home runs, 11 RBI and 16 runs scored during the streak.
The win by the Wildcats also snaps Lehigh's ten game win streak, and they had also won 15 of their last 16 games as well. It was also the first win at the new softball field for Villanova as well.
