VILLANOVA, Pa.--Senior midfielder Erin Byrnes (Sayville, N.Y.) has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 second team, it was announced today. Byrnes earns all-district recognition for her combination of academic success and her contributions to Villanova on the field.
This season, Byrnes is one of four players on the Wildcats who have started all 20 games. Her five assists are tied for second on the team and she is third on the squad with nine points. Byrnes has registered two assists in a game twice this season, with those occasions coming in wins over Vermont and Seton Hall. She also has scored two goals on the year, including a game-winner against Davidson.
Byrnes has played in 80 games during her four-year career for Villanova and made 52 starts. Her career totals include 12 goals, 14 assists and 38 points, with four game-winning goals. Byrnes leads all current members of the roster with her career assist total and is second among active players in career goals.
Off the field, Byrnes carries a 3.39 GPA as a Communications major and is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. A student-athlete must have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA in order to be eligible for the academic teams sponsored by CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine.
The Wildcats are fresh off advancing past Connecticut in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday afternoon. The team traveled to Milwaukee today and will take on Marquette in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament on Sunday at 2 p.m. EST/1 p.m. CST.
Byrnes was one of 14 players from BIG EAST teams to receive a nod to the Academic All-District teams. Among the conference schools in District 2, Byrnes was joined on the second team by Michaela Buonomo (Georgetown) and Chelsey Corroto (West Virginia). Caitlin Durkee and Sara Jordan (Georgetown) each received first team honors.
NOTES: This is the fourth straight season that Villanova has had at least one player chosen to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams ... Since 2006, the Wildcats now have four second team selections and one first team selection.
