Wildcats Sign Six Players to National Letters of Intent

March 5, 2009

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Head coach John Byford today announced the signing of six scholastic players to National Letters of Intent. All six are expected to enroll at Villanova for the Fall 2009 semester and form a recruiting class that should pay immediate dividends across the board for a Wildcat program with a long history of excellence. The group of six players includes one goalkeeper, three defenders and two offensive players.

"I am very excited about this freshman class," Byford said. "It gives us some depth in certain positions, some players from some very high level club programs and will strengthen our squad considerably."

Below are profiles of each of the five players who signed letters of intent.

Alexa Carugati - Defender, Newtown, Pa./Pennington School

A four-year varsity letterwinner in soccer, basketball and track, Carugati played for a high school team that won the New Jersey Prep A state championship each year from 2005-08. Her team also won the New Jersey Mercer County Tournament in 2005, 2007 and 2008 as well as the McDonough Tournament in 2005, 2006 and 2008. The 2008 squad became the first in Pennington girl's soccer history to go undefeated (18-0) and was ranked number one in the nation by ESPN and NSCAA/adidas. Carugati was named second team All-Prep by the Trentonian in 2006 and was a first team selection in 2008 by the Trentonian and Star Ledger. She also was named to the `Mercer 33' squad as both a junior and senior, was three time 1st Team NJ All Prep and was chosen by Top Drawer Soccer as a `Player to Watch.'

Carugati has also been a starting defender for the FC Bucks Vipers for eight years. The team is a six-time Eastern Pennsylvania State Cup champion and the 2008 Region Premier League champion. FC Bucks won the 2008 Region I championship and placed third in the national championship. The team is currently ranked first in the state and region and second in the nation. Carugati was a teammate at Pennington and with FC Bucks of fellow incoming freshman Heidi Sabatura.

Coach Byford on Carugati:
Alexa is an excellent defender who comes from a top quality club team and an outstanding high school program. She has experience playing at a national championship level which will help her with the transition into college soccer. I expect her to be a major contributor to this program.

Carly Edgcomb - Midfield/Defender, Princeton, NJ/Princeton High School

Edgcomb was a senior team captain and three-time MVP at Princeton High School, where she was a three-time all-county selection and member of the `Mercer 33' squad. Edgcomb also was named a Top 20 player in the region as both a junior and senior.

As a club soccer player, Edgcomb was a member of the Region 1 ODP pool in 2007 and 2008 and a two-time participant in the Interregional Camp in 2007 and 2009. She was a U-16 national champion and U-17 national finalist with New Jersey ODP and started every game. Edgcomb's Montclair club team was a Region 1 league finalist and a regional tournament semifinalist in 2007, while her FC Bucks Vipers team in 2008 advanced to the national championship and was ranked in the top five in the nation. She was a teammate on the FC Bucks squad with fellow incoming freshmen Alexa Carugati and Heidi Sabatura.

Coach Byford on Edgcomb:
Carly is a very versatile player. She can play just about anywhere on the field. She has played for two of the best club teams in the region and, like Alexa and Heidi, has played at a national championship for her club. She has also won a national championship with NJ ODP so she is used to winning and winning at a high level.

Sam Kovarik - Midfielder, Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon High School

A four-year letterwinner and senior team captain, Kovarik earned three all-section, two all-district and two all-state honors in addition to being named a 2008 all-region selection. During her high school career, Quinn was a four-year varsity starter, including two years at midfield and two years in goal. She was a two-time team MVP and holds school records in four different categories, including goals-against average, save percentage, shutouts and career saves. Quinn received all-conference honorable mention accolades as a midfielder and was a two-time first team all-county choice as a goalkeeper. Quinn plays for the FC Frederick club team, who were state cup finalists in 2008, and has been a Maryland ODP member since 2003. She was a part of the Maryland ODP Brazilian Team in 2004.

Coach Byford on Quinn:
Kelsey is an excellent goalkeeper and a tremendously hardworking individual. She is brave, a good shot stopper and very good with the ball at her feet. Given her work ethic I expect her to push our senior goalkeeper very hard for playing time this year.

Heidi Sabatura - Forward, Lawrenceville, N.J./Pennington School

A four-year starter and senior captain, Sabatura comes to Villanova from a Pennington team that has won four straight state championships. She was named Player of the Year as a junior and earned multiple selections to all-area and All-Prep first and second teams. Sabatura also received NSCAA/adidas All-America honors as a senior. The 2008 squad became the first in Pennington girl's soccer history to go undefeated (18-0) and was ranked number one in the nation by ESPN and NSCAA/adidas.

Sabatura was a high school and club team teammate of fellow incoming freshman Alexa Carugati, and the two played for the FC Bucks Vipers. The club recently was ranked first in the nation and in the years Sabatura was on the team captured three consecutive state championships, one regional championship and a third place medal at the national championship.

Coach Byford on Sabatura:
Heidi is an excellent athlete who is very calm in front of goal and a proven goalscorer. Like Alexa and Carly she comes from an excellent soccer background and has played against some of the best teams in the country. I expect Heidi to be an impact player in this program.

Jaclyn Wood - Defender, Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy
