PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Heavy rains in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area made for an interesting first round at the BIG EAST Golf Championships at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Course. The inclement weather put the championships on hold for over three hours on Sunday. The women were able to complete 18 holes but the men's first round, which has two more holes to be played by Cincinnati, Georgetown and Seton Hall, will be completed tomorrow morning, April 19, prior to the start of second round.
Freshman Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.) currently leads the Villanova team members tied for 15th place after one round, putting together a first round score of 74. Conor Casey (Madison, N.J.), Brendan Kelly (Annapolis, Md.), Brian Colbert (Cary, Ill.) and Colin List (Boynton Beach, Fla.) round out the remaining Wildcats currently tied for 28th, 40th, 40th and 59th place, respectively. As a team, VU is tied for 9th place overall.
Individually on the men's side, DePaul's Michael Furci leads the field with 2-under 69. Furci is in a technical tie with Seton Hall's Troy Spencer who has an official 2-under 69 through 12 holes. Connecticut's Matt Dubrowski stands in third with a 1-under 70.
