BIG EAST Weekly Release
Senior forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) was named to the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll in awards announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. This is the third time this season that Ryan has garnered weekly recognition and comes after she scored three goals in two games this past weekend.
In a 3-2 win over DePaul last Friday afternoon Ryan scored the first two Villanova goals of the game. Both of those goals gave the Wildcats the lead in a contest that they never trailed before going on to the win. Ryan tallied her second multi-goal game of the season and also reached 100 career points with her two scores versus the Blue Demons, becoming only the third play in program history to reach the 100-point plateau.
Ryan continued her strong play by scoring the only Villanova goal in a 3-1 loss at Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon. Ryan scored in the 62nd minute to tie the game at 1-1 before the Fighting Irish eventually scored twice in the final six minutes to lead to the final outcome. Ryan scored the first Wildcats goal in a road game against Notre Dame in the last five trips Villanova has made out to South Bend. The goal she scored on Sunday afternoon was also the 40th of her career.
To this point in the season Ryan has tallied 12 goals, five assists and a team-high 29 points. She leads the Wildcats in both goals and points on the season and the 12 goals are a single-season career high, surpassing the 11 tallies that she had as a sophomore in 2009.
Ryan was previously named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on October 3 and was also an honor roll selection on September 5. She has garnered weekly recognition from the conference nine times during her career.
Villanova has one game remaining on the regular season schedule and it will play on the road against Georgetown on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. A win in that game would clinch a spot for the Wildcats in the BIG EAST Championship that begins later this month. Villanova can finish anywhere from fourth to sixth in the National Division, with the top five teams in the division standings earning a conference tournament berth.
