TAMPA, Fla. - In the opening round of the Match Play at TPC Tampa in Tampa, Florida, Villanova played to a tie versus Marquette in the 16-team event. However, by virtue of a tiebreaker based on holes won, Marquette prevailed and moved onto the quarterfinals while Villanova went to the consolation bracket.
The two winners for Villanova were senior Conor Casey (Madison, N.J.) and sophomore Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) who both won 2 & 1, which each earned a full point for the squad. Senior Brendan Kelly (Annapolis, Md.) also earned a half point by tying his match with his opponent. Also participating for Villanova was junior Brian Colbert (Cary, Ill.) and sophomore Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.).
The Wildcats played an afternoon consolation match against Morehead State and fell 4-1. The lone winner for Villanova was junior Brian Colbert. Due to time constraints, Villanova was not able to play any consolation on Saturday.
In the championship match, Kennesaw State defeated Ball State 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The Villanova golf team will be back in action at the Wendy's Charleston Shootout on February 28 in Charleston, S.C.
