Villanova/Saint Joseph's Post-Game Notes

Aug. 22, 2011

Recap | Box Score | Quotes

Today marked only the second time that Villanova has played a contest on a Monday in the last 15 years. The most recent Monday outing for the Wildcats came at Rutgers on September 22, 2008 in a locally televised game. Today's game was a result of a weather-related postponement from Sunday afternoon.

No game involving Villanova in the last 10 years had featured a successful penalty kick attempt by both teams. Senior midfielder Katy Nagy (Bellmore, N.Y.) registered the first penalty kick goal of her career.

Senior forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) became the sixth player in program history to reach 30 career goals with her second half tally in today's game. Ryan is now tied for fourth place in school history in goals with 30, matching the totals of Laura Johnson (2001-04) and Nikki Mabery (2004-07). Next ahead of her on the school's all-time list is Jean Hajjar (1985-88) in third place with 36 goals.

Ryan also registered her 12th career game-winning goal and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the program's record books. She is one behind Laura Johnson (2001-04), who had 13 career game-winners.

Despite their campuses being separated by just a few miles Villanova and Saint Joseph's met for only the fifth time ever in women's soccer this afternoon. The Wildcats lead the all-time series by a 4-1 count and avenged a loss to the Hawks in the most recent meeting, also at the West Campus Soccer Complex on August 28, 2005. Saint Joseph's won that game by a 2-1 score.
